This pilot project allowed the Old Brewery Mission homeless shelter to implement a program to ease emergency shelter clientele out of crisis and into independence and productivity. Over six months the project expanded from the renovation of a single 10-bed room, to become four separate projects:
The renovation of the two emergency dormitories of the men and women’s pavilions.
The prototype design and subsequent development of a bed/storage system for use in the newly implemented L’Etape program.
The involvement of over 70 artists, educators, students, and others in an art project designing privacy screens for the beds of the L’Etape program.
For me, the obvious place to begin was to bring dignity to the “home space” the residents would occupy during their transition out of homelessness.
